The Camino Connection, Relationships, and Dementia
#FinancialAbuse #CaregiverTips #ProtectYourFamily
Lori La Bey talks with Charles Wallace, who goes by Chip, about the financial abuse by a caregiver who stole nearly $1 million from his mother with dementia over four years. He hopes this will help other families prevent their loved ones’ life savings from being stolen. Chip leveraged his 15-year career in banking and finance and taught himself forensic investigation to uncover the loss. He wrote the book The Caregiver’s Game to help other families from falling victim to financial abuse.

Learn:
- How Charles’s mother was taken advantage of and financially abused
- Get your paperwork in order long before you need it, as it might be too late at that point, and most likely, far more expensive.
- Power of Attorney (POA)
- Healthcare Directive
- A Will or Trust
- Use a specialist to coordinate your paperwork, like an Elder law Attorney.
- Don’t turn everything over to someone else without actively monitoring things
- Keep your connections to important contacts so they know you are the one in control, and the caregiver is an employee only, not one in charge of the finances and medical decisions.
- Doctors, Attorneys, Financial Planners
- Bankers
- Bottom line: don’t outsource trust!
