Under the Influence of Astrology

Astrology may offer comfort, but evidence suggests its psychological effects deserve a balanced perspective.

Highlights:

  • Astrology can influence decision-making, stress, and self-perception
  • Psychological effects like the Barnum Effect explain why predictions feel personal
  • Evidence does not support astrology as a reliable predictor of life events

Among all generations be it you ng or old , astrology is often the most discussed subject. Most newspapers and some popular magazines carry predictions for the day or the week linked to your horoscope.

From health to death, the stars seem to have all the answers. For many, astrology is the go-to guide for life’s biggest and smallest decisions. Like feeling low? See an astrologer. Feeling great? See an astrologer. Confused? See an astrologer.

But have you ever considered whether you are gradually developing an astrological addiction?

Can Astrology Predict Life and Death?

Astrology does not have a single, universal theory. Ancient cultures developed their own versions of it over time, eventually leading to the modern concept of astrology.

This report focuses more on Vedic astrology, as Indian culture relies heavily on astrology and its predictions. Other traditional methods are also discussed, but more evidence is on Vedic astrology.

Vedic astrology primarily relies on a natal (birth) chart, also known as a horoscope, to interpret an individual’s personality, life events, and future. While other systems, such as Nadi astrology, also exist, the birth chart remains the foundation of most Vedic astrological predictions.

According to Vedic astrology, a person’s birth chart can reveal important events in their , including relationships, career, health, and finances and give you solutions to overcome obstacles . However, despite these longstanding beliefs and theories, there is no conclusive scientific evidence demonstrating that such predictions are consistently accurate or reliable.

Having said that, astrologers can often describe aspects of a person’s past with surprising accuracy, which can leave clients both impressed and unsettled. Once they establish credibility and gain their clients’ confidence, curiosity about the future naturally takes over. Renowned astrologers can command very high fees for their services, reflecting the trust and value many clients place in their predictions.

The Dark Side of Astrology No One Talks About

Astrology may lack scientific proof, but its influence on the human mind is undeniable.

A study published in the International Journal of Social Psychiatry showed a correlation between astrological belief and psychological, cognitive, and personality traits like stress, thinking style, and self-concept verification.

Case studies on “fortune-telling addiction” have conceptualised it as a possible behavioural addiction and described symptoms such as distress, cravings, and salience (1 Trusted Source

Are Astrological Predictions True? The Psychology Behind the Belief

Astrological beliefs are still very popular with many educated members of modern society. Despite this, surprisingly few rigorous studies have been performed to investigate why astrology is so appealing and persistent.

To explain the psychological basis for astrological belief, here are some popular theories behind “astrological belief.”

Theory 1: The Barnum Effect or Forer effect (P.T. Barnum)

One of the most believed causes for belief in astrology is the so-called “Barnum effect,” which is named after the famous American showman P.T. Barnum.

Commonly used in psychology, it refers to the tendency for people to accept vague and general characterizations of themselves as accurate, despite the fact that the description is common and applies to everyone (2 Trusted Source

Theory 2: The “Vague Description” Trick (Forer, 1949)

Psychologist Bertram Forer discovered that when people are given vague, general statements about themselves like “Sometimes you are outgoing and social, but other times you are quiet and reserved,” they almost always think, “Wow, that describes me perfectly!”

Because the statement covers both sides of a personality trait, it fits virtually everyone, yet people feel like it was tailor-made for them (3 Trusted Source

Theory 3: How Skeptics and Believers React (Glick, Gottesman, & Jolton, 1989)

According to Glick, Gottesman, and Jolton (1989), astrological belief is associated with certainty orientation and authoritarianism, including an intolerance for ambiguity. Compared to skeptics, believers might have a greater need for information that would reduce the uncertainty associated with making attributions about self and others (3 Trusted Source

).

Adding a Zodiac label makes it feel more real; even skeptics were much more likely to say a personality description was accurate if they were simply told, “This reading is based on your Zodiac sign.” (3 Trusted Source

Theory 4: Self-verification 360° (Swann 1990; Markus 1977)

Self-verification theory assumes that people actively work to preserve their self-views, even if these self-views are negative, which may begin to explain how belief in astrology emerges in the first place (4 Trusted Source

Belief Beyond Science: How Many Young People Believe in Astrology?

Contrary to popular belief, astrology isn’t just an older generation’s fascination. It turns out that this study demonstrates that belief is also influenced by younger people, surprisingly those with scientific backgrounds!

A huge survey of the science knowledge and attitudes toward science of nearly 10,000 undergraduates at a large public university over 20 years was conducted, which included several questions addressing student beliefs in astrology and other forms of pseudoscience.

The survey has been administered to students in General Education Astronomy lecture courses for freshmen and sophomores at the University of Arizona since 1988. The students were assessed with two parts of the survey—the first part is a set of 21 knowledge-based questions, four of which are open-ended with short written answers and 17 of which are true/false or multiple choice, and the second part is a set of 24 statements about science, pseudoscience, and technology.

  • Only 22% of students answered astrology is not at all scientific.
  • Only 29% of students “disagreed” or “strongly disagreed” with the claim that planets influence daily life.
  • Females were slightly more likely to adhere to the principles of astrology.

The overall final results reveal that a large majority of students (78%) considered astrology “very” or “sort of” scientific, and only 52% of science majors said that astrology is “not at all” scientific (6 Trusted Source

Believing in astrology does not necessarily mean a person lacks scientific knowledge.

Astrology Around the World: Vedic, Western, Chinese, and Indigenous Beliefs

This study examines the relationship between astrological beliefs and mental health outcomes across diverse cultural contexts (Western, Vedic, Chinese, and Indigenous). Using a mixed-methods approach, combining a quantitative survey (n = 500) and qualitative semi-structured interviews, the paper investigates whether astrology functions as a beneficial psychological tool or contributes to cognitive distortions and distress.

Cultural Variations

Astrological Tradition Primary Function Primary Benefits Primary Risks / Drawbacks
Western Astrology Personality exploration & digital community Encourages self-reflection, provides social connection High anxiety from negative transits; over-reliance on daily reads
Vedic Astrology (India) Karmic roadmap & spiritual guidance Reduces existential dread by framing struggles as temporary karmic lessons Fatalistic mindset; stigma around “inauspicious” charts
Chinese Astrology Health, energy balance (Qi), & life timing Mind-body awareness; aligns lifestyle with elemental models Decision paralysis and procrastination waiting for “lucky” dates
Indigenous Traditions Ancestral connection & holistic healing Lowest reported anxiety; strong community and identity ties Historical suppression and limited empirical literature

Although it has therapeutic advantages, like reframing life’s obstacles and encouraging self-acceptance, it also carries psychological risks when it diminishes personal agency, causes anxiety through unfavorable predictions, or results in decision paralysis.

Clinical settings should treat astrology not as a predictive science but as a symbolic narrative tool that requires balance to avoid dependency (7 Trusted Source

Can Astrology Predict Your Destiny? The Study That Challenged Indian Astrologers
Here’s an interesting study in which Indian astrologers were tested to see if their astrological predictions based on a person’s birth chart were correct, as it is believed they critically rely on the moon’s planetary position.

This study was India’s first publicly held test of Indian astrology. The study is done by testing a group of astrologers from Maharashtra; the researchers analyzed two distinct datasets totaling 676 birth charts with opposite life characteristics:

  • Group A: 338 birth charts of “intelligent” people.
  • Group B: 338 birth charts of intellectually and developmentally disabled (IDD) individuals.

The study examined textbook principles of traditional astrology applied across all 9 planets, 12 houses, the Ascendant, and house lords (evaluating a total of 34 entities and 68 parameters covering positive and negative rules). These included:

  • Negative impacts (e.g., conjugation/square/opposite aspects with Saturn or Mars; presence in cruel Nakshatras, debilitated/enemy signs, or the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses).
  • Positive impacts (beneficial placements/conjugations).
  • Cumulative/Total negativity (sum of all negative rules complied with per planet or house).

If the two groups differed by more than 10%, it was considered evidence that an astrological rule might be valid. (Traditional astrology would expect a much larger difference, around 40% or more. The positions of planets, houses, and other basic astrological rules were almost the same in both groups. However, the study found NO meaningful differences.

Negative planetary influences didn’t matter!

Even when all the supposedly “negative” astrological factors were added together, they did not distinguish between the two groups, despite their clear differences in real-life intelligence.

The basic principles used extensively by practicing astrologers do not act as real-world differentiators. The findings confirm that the poor performance is due to the inherent limitations of astrology itself, rather than the skill level of individual astrologers ().

Should Astrology Predict Your Life—Or Should You?

This topic is not about debating whether astrology is true or false. Instead, it explores, using evidence, how astrological predictions can influence people’s mental health and decision-making. Believing in astrology is a personal choice, and there is nothing wrong with finding comfort or guidance in it.

However, making major life decisions or placing your entire future in the hands of astrological predictions may not be the healthiest way to cope with life’s challenges. The aim is to encourage informed, balanced thinking while recognizing the potential psychological impact of such beliefs.
