Health experts note that warmer coastal temperatures have extended the seasonal window during which the bacteria remain active.
Simple Steps to Prevent Vibrio Infections
Public health officials emphasize that infections are preventable with a few simple precautions:
- Avoid eating raw or undercooked oysters and other shellfish.
- Keep open cuts, surgical wounds, recent tattoos, and piercings out of seawater and brackish water.
- Cover wounds with waterproof bandages if exposure cannot be avoided.
