A former senior nursing assistant has been sentenced for taking and sharing degrading photographs and videos of patients with advanced dementia.
A former senior nursing assistant in Northern Ireland has been sentenced after taking and sharing degrading photographs and videos of four patients with advanced dementia who were unable to consent or communicate what had happened to them.
Ciara Corvan, 28, from Armagh, received a two-year probation order and 100 hours of community service at Craigavon Crown Court on July 27, 2026.
She had pleaded guilty to seven counts of ill-treatment involving four patients under the Mental Health Order (Northern Ireland) 1986.
Police described the prosecution as the first of its kind in Northern Ireland involving the ill-treatment of patients through degrading photographs, videos and accompanying commentary.
What Is Advanced Dementia?
Dementia is a broad term for conditions that progressively affect memory, thinking, communication, behaviour and the ability to perform daily activities.
People with advanced dementia may require assistance with eating, dressing, bathing, mobility and personal hygiene. Some lose the ability to communicate discomfort, report mistreatment or understand why something is happening around them.
A person’s ability to make decisions may vary depending on the decision and the progression of the condition. When someone lacks capacity, decisions about their care must protect their rights, dignity, safety and best interests.
The inability to provide consent does not remove a person’s right to privacy. It increases the responsibility of caregivers to protect that privacy.

Patients with Advanced Dementia Were Filmed Without Consent
Corvan was working at the Bluestone Dementia Unit at Craigavon Area Hospital when the offences occurred between October 2022 and November 2023.
The victims included two women and two men with advanced dementia. Police said all four lacked the mental capacity to consent to being photographed or recorded.
The court heard that Corvan used her mobile phone to photograph and film patients before sharing the material with colleagues through a social media messaging application. The recordings reportedly included a patient in a bath, another patient lying in bed and footage in which Corvan placed her face extremely close to a patient.
Some of the images and videos were accompanied by comments described as degrading, offensive and mocking. Colleagues who received the material reported the behavior, leading to Corvan’s suspension and an adult safeguarding investigation.
A forensic examination of her mobile phone later identified additional victims.
Judge Called the Conduct a Serious Breach of Trust
Judge Patrick McGurgan said Corvan had been placed in a position of trust and was responsible for caring for some of society’s most vulnerable people.
Although the offences did not involve physical violence, he described the conduct as a “serious breach of trust” and said it had demeaned people to whom she owed a duty of care.
“Each family who placed a loved one in care as a last resort expects them to be treated with respect and dignity,” the judge said.
Corvan’s lawyer told the court that she was profoundly sorry for the suffering caused and had written a letter of apology to the victims’ families.
However, the families said the patients had been degraded at a time when they were unable to defend themselves or tell relatives what they had experienced.
Families Describe a Gross Violation of Human Rights
In a joint statement, the families described their relatives as private and kind individuals who could no longer speak for themselves during their final years.
“What was done to them was a gross violation of their basic human rights,” they said.
The families said Corvan had sought entertainment by humiliating people living through the progressive loss of their memory, communication and ability to complete everyday tasks.
They expressed concern about the effect of social media culture on how vulnerable people are treated and urged others to think carefully before photographing, recording or sharing material involving people in their care.
They welcomed the court’s recognition that such conduct was criminal but said no sentence could reverse the distress caused.
Why Photographing Vulnerable Patients Is a Safeguarding Concern
Photographs or videos of patients can reveal their identity, medical condition, living environment and intimate care needs. Recording a patient during bathing, dressing, treatment or other personal care can represent a severe intrusion into privacy, particularly when the person cannot understand or consent to the recording.
Sharing such material through messaging applications can extend the harm because digital images may be copied, forwarded or retained beyond the sender’s control.

Health Trust Apologizes and Promises Safeguarding Action
The Southern Health and Social Care Trust said it was deeply sorry for the employee’s actions and recognized the distress caused to the patients’ families. The trust said the staff member was removed from duty after the allegations emerged and that the matter was referred to its adult protection team and the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
Family members were informed and offered ongoing support during the investigation. The trust said patient safety remained its highest priority and that all employees were expected to maintain appropriate standards of care and professionalism.
Northern Ireland Commissioner for Older People Siobhan Casey said safeguarding was paramount and that families must have confidence in the care system.She also called for stronger legal protections for vulnerable adults through the proposed Adult Protection Bill.
Landmark Case Sends Warning to Care Workers
Detective Chief Inspector Claire McDonald said Corvan had exploited the patients’ inability to consent and communicate for her own entertainment.
Police said the sentence should serve as a warning to anyone working in a position of trust that degrading or exploiting vulnerable patients through photographs, videos or online commentary can constitute criminal behaviour.
The case also demonstrates the importance of staff reporting misconduct when they witness or receive evidence of patient mistreatment.
People with dementia may lose the ability to speak for themselves, but they never lose their right to privacy, dignity and respectful care.
