Do you often default to ‘fixing anxiety’ and consistently find yourself more confused and anxious because of it? If so, this episode of the anxiety guy podcast is for you. Enjoy (and don’t forget to leave a comment at the bottom after):
Why Fixing Anxiety Doesn’t Work (and What to Do Instead)
If you’ve ever struggled with any form of anxiety, you know the desperate feeling that comes with trying to “fix” it. Late-night Google searches. Endless self-help books. One more breathing technique. Another supplement. Another appointment. The mind says: “If I can just figure out what’s wrong and fix it, then I’ll finally feel free.”
It sounds logical, but here’s the problem: fixing anxiety doesn’t work.
In fact, many people find that the more they chase anxiety solutions, the more anxious they become. The cycle grows stronger, not weaker. And over time, the act of fixing turns into another symptom of anxiety itself.
So why does this happen? And if fixing anxiety doesn’t bring lasting relief, what does?
The Trap of Fixing Anxiety
Fixing anxiety feels productive. It feels like you’re taking action, doing something about the problem. But here’s the trap the inner protector places: when your brain sees you constantly trying to fix, it assumes there really is something broken or dangerous that needs fixing.
Instead of calming the system, this keeps the alarm bells ringing. The message becomes: “You are not safe until you solve this. You are not okay until you fix this.”
So every attempt to fix anxiety becomes a reinforcement of fear. And the more you try, the more convinced your nervous system becomes that you’re in danger. Can you relate to what I’m saying here?
Why Fixing Feeds the Cycle
Think about how often anxiety sufferers bounce between new methods: one week it’s meditation, the next week it’s a new diet, the next it’s a brain training app. Each new attempt brings a burst of hope, followed by disappointment when the symptoms return.
This constant “trial and error” cycle quietly teaches the brain: “Anxiety is powerful, I am powerless, and I must keep fighting.”
Fixing anxiety in this way never allows space for trust, safety, or stability. It keeps the focus on the anxiety itself, rather than on living life beyond it. That’s why today’s podcast episode is so crucial, make sure to listen in full at the top of this page.
What “Fixing” Really Means
When people talk about fixing anxiety, they’re usually referring to a belief that:
-
Anxiety is evidence of being broken.
-
Anxiety symptoms are dangerous and must be eliminated.
-
Anxiety relief only comes when it’s all 100% gone.
But here’s the truth: anxiety is not a sign that you’re falling apart. It’s an unconsciously conditioned response. It’s your nervous system doing its job a little too well, sending alarms even when there’s no real threat.
Trying to fix it as if it’s a flaw only strengthens the belief that something is wrong with you.
The Shift Away from Fixing Anxiety
So if fixing anxiety doesn’t work, what does? Yes, I’ll go much deeper into this in today’s podcast, but for now understand this…
Real recovery doesn’t come from endless fixing. It comes from a shift in approach, a shift from fighting yourself to working with yourself.
It’s about creating new experiences that show your brain you are safe. It’s about allowing space for vulnerability rather than constantly patching over it. And it’s about living in ways that are bigger than anxiety, instead of living as if anxiety is the center of your world.
This shift is simple, but not always easy. It feels uncomfortable at first because the old “fixing” habits have been repeated for so long. But once you step into it, something powerful begins to change.
Why This Approach Feels Unfamiliar
If you’ve spent years fixing anxiety, you might wonder why another path feels so vulnerable. That vulnerability is actually a sign you’re moving in the right direction. The brain resists new ways of being because they don’t feel as familiar as fixing.
But familiarity isn’t the same as truth. Just because your old patterns feel safe doesn’t mean they’re serving you.
What to Do Instead
Instead of pouring all your energy into fixing anxiety, begin noticing how much of your day is spent in fight-mode. How often are you checking symptoms? Searching for reassurance? Running through “what ifs”?
Awareness is the first step.
From there, the true inner work is about gently redirecting your energy into living rather than fixing. That’s where deeper healing happens.
I won’t lay out every step here in this blog post, because that’s exactly what I go into in depth in my podcast episodes and my Health Anxiety Recovery Program but I can tell you this: when you step out of the fixing trap, you open the door to recovery.
The Cost of Staying in Fix-Mode
It’s worth asking yourself: How much of my life have I lost to fixing anxiety?
The hours of research. The missed opportunities. The constant pressure to feel better before you can live better.
This fixing approach comes at a high cost, not just emotionally, but physically and spiritually. It keeps you running in circles instead of moving forward.
You Don’t Need Fixing
Here’s the takeaway: you don’t need fixing, because you are not broken. Anxiety is not proof of weakness, it’s a pattern. And patterns can change (as much as the inner protector will try to convince you they can’t).
The moment you stop trying to fix anxiety as if it’s a personal flaw, you create space for something new: safety, trust, and healing.
The real breakthrough comes not from controlling every thought or eliminating every symptom, but from stepping into life in a way that proves to your nervous system that you are already okay.
Final Thoughts
Fixing anxiety feels like the right path, but in reality, it keeps you stuck in the same anxious loop. The brain learns through repetition, and if all it sees is you trying to fix, it assumes danger is still present.
The alternative requires courage. It means stepping into vulnerability, choosing to live, and allowing new experiences that show your body it can finally relax.
If you’ve been stuck in the fixing cycle, maybe this is the reminder you need: there is another way forward.
