Why Evening Naps are Ruining Your Bedtime

Do you struggle to fall asleep at night?

The culprit might be your late afternoon power nap.

Here is the biology behind it.

Throughout the day, a chemical called adenosine builds up in your brain.

Think of adenosine as your internal “”sleep debt”” tracker.

The longer you stay awake, the higher your adenosine levels climb, making you feel naturally sleepy and ready for bed by nighttime.

But if you take a nap in the late afternoon—especially after 3 PM—you instantly mop up and clear away all that adenosine.

You erase your sleep debt.

So when your head hits the pillow at 10 PM, your brain thinks you don’t need rest, and your evening sleep completely deteriorates.

If you need a nap, keep it under 20 minutes and keep it early.

Don’t clear the chemical your body needs to sleep deeply tonight.
