H-E-B Salmonella Jalapeño Recall: What’s Been Pulled From Shelves
On 14 August 2026, NatureBest Precut & Produce LLC, based in Missouri City and Houston, Texas, issued a voluntary recall of products made with jalapeño peppers supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors. The recall covers more than 35 NatureBest and H-E-B branded items, including several varieties of pico de gallo, diced jalapeños, jalapeño popper stuffed mushrooms, and a soup mix, distributed to stores in Texas and Louisiana between 3 July and 5 August 2026. Where the Contaminated Jalapeños Actually Came From
The source traces back further than any single store. The FDA and CDC identified the outbreak strain as Salmonella Javiana, linked to fresh jalapeños grown by a single farm in Sinaloa, Mexico and imported into the US by Coast Citrus Distributors. Investigators found that 93% of interviewed patients had eaten at a Mexican style restaurant before falling ill, including locations of Chipotle and QDOBA, both of which received the implicated peppers. Chipotle switched suppliers at affected locations on 20 July, and QDOBA stopped using jalapeños entirely on 28 July, so the FDA no longer considers either chain an ongoing risk. It’s Not Just H-E-B: Whole Foods, Target, Walmart, and Trader Joe’s Too
The recall has fanned out well beyond one grocery chain. Whole Foods Market recalled dozens of its own salsa, guacamole, and pico de gallo products on 12 August, sold across 12 states including Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Ohio.
