A Vox headline made new Alzheimer’s drugs sound like a cure was close. The article itself tells a different story.
Lecanemab and donanemab are IV drugs that can slow early-stage Alzheimer’s, and that’s real progress. But patients don’t get better. They get worse, just more slowly. The drugs also carry a serious risk of swelling or bleeding in the brain.
By 2050, an estimated 153 million people will be living with dementia. They deserve the truth, not false hope.
We have progress. We don’t have a cure. Prevention is still the key.
