Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative brain disorder and the most common form of dementia. Dementia refers to a group of conditions that cause progressive memory loss, cognitive decline, and impaired daily functioning, most often in elderly people.
In Alzheimer’s, short-term memory is affected first, while long-term memories may remain intact for a longer time. This can make patients – and sometimes their families – believe that their memory is still sharp, when in reality the disease is silently progressing.
As the disease advances, it not only impacts memory but also thinking, reasoning, judgment, behaviour, language, and the ability to carry out routine tasks. Personality and mood changes, confusion about time or place, and difficulty recognizing familiar people are also common.
