Stem Cells Offer New Hope in Healing the Heart After a Heart Attack

The Healing Power of Stem Cells

This was given directly into the coronary artery, which had already caused the heart attack, within days of its occurrence.

Following that, physicians would closely monitor each patient’s heart performance over the course of a few months using high-quality scans and blood tests to assess the quality of the recovery.

Promising Results for Heart Recovery

The outcomes were promising. Patients who received stem cell therapy showed better heart recovery than those who received a placebo. They had:

  • Better left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) – This is one of the measurements of the efficiency with which the heart expels the blood.
  • Reduced scarring and heart tissue damage.
  • Reduced inflammation, which is the leading cause of aggravation of heart failure following a heart attack.

Furthermore, the therapy was safe and well-tolerated, with no significant side effects or complications involving the stem cells. This renders it as one of the initial large human experiments that demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of using stem cells in heart repair.

Why This Matters for Future Heart Care

Heart disease typically begins with a heart attack, and patients must take medications and be monitored for the rest of their lives. However, if stem cell therapy is truly capable of restoring heart muscle, it has the potential to transform the treatment of heart attacks.
