“Reading Aloud” – the benefits of reading aloud

  An AHP Dementia Webinar

http://www.alzscot.org/ahpwebinars

Thank you! as a Newly qualified speech and language therapist, information like this is invaluable to my development.

Lots of new ideas to follow up on

Loved hearing about speech and language therapy approaches at the different stages of a person’s journey.

Lisa Fox’s presentation today was a really concise and clearly communicated overview of dementia and interventions, including reading aloud. Her slide about aphasia (generation, retrieval, phonology, symantics, etc.) was brilliant

Every two months we work together as an allied health professional’s community to develop, for you, a national AHP Dementia Webinar where we share the work and practice of allied health professionals in Scotland and our many partners. Our vision for the webinars is

“through working in partnership, we can all improve outcomes

for people that really matter”.

In our AHP Dementia webinar in October 2024, people joined the conversation with Lisa Fox, speech and language therapists, NHS Highland who discussed the benefits of reading aloud and other strategies for people with dementia, their carers and families.

You can WATCH AGAIN; the webinar link is here

You can view all our AHP Dementia webinars here

We invited participants at the end of the webinar to share something they would take away from the webinar and use in their practice, or life, or going forward. Here is a selection of the replies.

  • Use links to do more research and put knowledge into practice and share with families.  Thank you
  • I could share what I’ve learned today to colleagues & suggest a reading activity to our activity coordinator
  • I am going to look at some of the apps and websites.   I look after my Mum who has dementia. It is good to have a better understanding of how dementia can affect language. Thank you
  • Following up and finding out more on ‘reading aloud’ practices.
  • To look at other ways to communicate. Further reading to be had to use in everyday practice
  • Use of objects to help with communication for advanced dementia
  • I will be reading up more on speech and how dementia affects this
  • Lots of different types of therapies can be used to help people with dementia
  • Find out about Better Conversations – communication partner training and see if it is available in my area
  • I will continue to advocate for speech and language therapy time allocated to communication. I will look further into the recommendations (e.g. the RCSLT position paper). I will share some of the online interactive tools used (e.g. mentis, QR codes as a “back-up) with colleagues who also have a training role.
  • Make more use of our speech and language therapy contact

COMING SOON in 2025.  Our new webinars this year will be held on:

  • 30th April from 3.30pm – 4.30pm with a focus on enhanced access
  • 25th June from 3.30pm – 4.30pm with a focus on partnership working
  • 5th November from 3.30pm – 4.30pm with a focus on a skilled workforce
  • 10th December from 3.30pm – 4.30pm with a focus on innovation, improvement and research

Hold the dates as we move to a new platform for our AHP dementia webinars and also offer AHP spotlight sessions in the Alzheimer Scotland Virtual resource centre.
