Occasional forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging, but frequent and progressive memory loss may be a sign of dementia. Understanding how memory changes affect everyday life can help distinguish normal aging from a condition that needs medical evaluation.
Dr. S. Sandeep Kumar, Consultant Neuro Physician at Yashoda Hospitals, explains that with normal aging, people may occasionally forget something but remember it later or with a reminder while continuing their daily activities independently. In dementia, memory problems may progressively worsen, with individuals forgetting recent conversations or events, repeating questions and gradually needing help with activities they previously managed on their own.
Not every memory problem is Alzheimer’s disease. Forgetfulness can have several causes, including potentially treatable ones. A consistent or worsening change in memory should be evaluated by a neurologist to understand the underlying cause.
