In this 124th episode of Sober Head Podcast, Dr. Esra Çavuşoğlu, PhD welcomes Dr. David Perlmutter, MD.
Dr. David Perlmutter, MD is a board-certified neurologist known for his work in preventive neurology and a six-time “New York Time”s bestselling author. His work focuses on the links between brain health, nutrition, metabolism, and neurodegenerative disease, and he is perhaps best known for his internationally acclaimed book “Grain Brain.” He serves on the editorial board of the “Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease” and is also a faculty member at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Director of Neuroscience Research at Bryan Therapeutics.
In this episode, Dr. David Perlmutter explores the emerging science behind Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive decline, brain aging, and long-term brain health. We discuss how microglia, the brain’s immune cells, are influenced by insulin resistance, elevated blood sugar, ultra-processed foods, the gut-brain connection, and mitochondrial health.
Dr. Perlmutter explains why Alzheimer’s risk may begin developing 10, 20, or even 30 years before noticeable symptoms appear, making prevention and metabolic health increasingly important earlier in life. We also explore p-tau217 testing, uric acid, GLP-1 drugs, gene therapies, and emerging approaches such as 40 Hz gamma light stimulation.
The central message is simple: when it comes to protecting the brain and supporting healthy aging, exercise, nutrition, quality sleep, and metabolic health remain some of the most powerful tools we have.
