A man went to a familiar place in his neighbourhood—but when it was time to return, he couldn’t figure out how to get home.
This can be a form of visual-spatial or geographical disorientation, where the brain struggles to understand and navigate familiar surroundings.
The visual system has different pathways involved in recognizing objects, colours and faces and in understanding where we are in space. When these networks are affected, navigation can become surprisingly difficult.
This can occur with conditions such as stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or brain tumours.
So when someone who has always navigated familiar places suddenly starts getting lost, it may be more than simple forgetfulness.
