Free Mobile Cancer Screenings for Women Across Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu launches initiatives for early detection and prevention of cervical cancer, including screenings and HPV vaccination.

Tamil Nadu has launched a ₹41-crore ‘Women Wellness in Week (WWW)’ project to strengthen women’s healthcare through free breast and cervical cancer screening across all districts, with a special focus on early detection and rural accessibility. ()

New Initiative to Empower Women Through Preventive Healthcare

Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian announced the initiative on Sunday, describing it as a major step toward empowering women through preventive healthcare.

“Every district will have one dedicated mobile medical unit that will travel to different areas to screen women for breast and cervical cancer. This will help reach those who cannot visit hospitals for regular check-ups,” he said.

The project will become operational within the next ten days. Each mobile unit will be equipped with diagnostic tools and trained personnel, enabling women in rural and semi-urban regions to undergo essential screenings close to home.

Breast and cervical cancer are among the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. Breast cancer develops in the cells of the breast, often presenting as a lump, changes in breast shape, or skin dimpling, and early detection significantly improves survival rates.

Cervical cancer originates in the cervix, typically caused by persistent infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Regular screening through mammograms, Pap smears, and HPV testing can detect these cancers at an early stage, allowing for timely treatment and greatly improving outcomes.

Free HPV Vaccination Drive to Follow

Alongside the WWW initiative, the state government is also preparing to launch a free vaccination drive against Human Papillomavirus (HPV)—a leading cause of cervical cancer—for all girls under 14 years of age.

The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) has initiated vaccine procurement, and the rollout will take place through government schools and primary health centers once supplies are finalized.

Empowering Women through Health and Inclusion

The Minister announced the programme during an event under the Chief Minister’s Girl Child Protection Scheme in Saidapet, where he also distributed maturity deposits and savings bonds to beneficiaries. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment through education, health, and financial inclusion.

On the broader public health front, Subramanian noted that dengue cases remain under control due to ongoing vector-control efforts by local bodies. “Preventive measures have significantly reduced dengue-related fatalities. Civic officials have been instructed to continue intensive mosquito eradication drives,” he added.

The Women Wellness in Week (WWW) project reflects Tamil Nadu’s larger vision to enhance women’s health outcomes through early intervention and community outreach, positioning the state as a national model in public health innovation and inclusive healthcare access.
