Female Taxi Driver – A Poem

Enjoy another wonderful poem by Jennifer Romas, who captures a moment with her Grandma that she’ll never forget. Jennifer helps us understand that there are many stories in a loved one’s life we know nothing about. THANK YOU, JENNIFER!

Female Taxi Driver

“I’ve never had a female taxi driver before,”

Says my Grandma, so I play along.

Grandad can’t cope anymore

she keeps trying to abscond.

We pass the sleeping homes

and blink off strong headlights.

I worry if the child locks

on the doors are working right.

“I’m a mother now,

yes, there are three.”

She’s remembering a time

much earlier than me.

Then “he’s cheating on me!” she cries,

remembering heartache from long ago.

“He’s been seeing the neighbour

but he doesn’t think I know.”

“You can’t trust a man that’s breathing.”

Poor grandad, he never would.

But your mind is back in your twenties

when another man had and could.

I try to orientate you

to date and to time

but you’re crying about a heartache

whilst I’m driving home mine.

And our last conversation,

sharing heartbreak in the car.

“You know, I know I love you,

I just don’t know who you are.”

Jennifer Ramos lost her Grandma to Alzheimer’s in 2022. Her poem captures one of their last conversations, which took place in Jennifer’s car, where her Grandma was reliving a bad relationship. It made Jennifer realise she only knew her Grandma as a Grandma and not as a woman, and that she had run out of time to ask her questions.
