A lot of people may assume that Alzheimer’s disease, which is characterized by slow memory loss and mental decline in older patients, is a normal part of aging. However, this is not the case. Alzheimer’s is a medical condition with memory loss severe enough to interfere with everyday life. Over time, signs of mental decline worsens as damage to the brain’s nerve cells becomes more extensive. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, which will be identified in more than three million Americans this year—most of them in their 70s and 80s. While the condition can be disorienting and emotionally difficult, many patients feel a sense of relief once they are formally diagnosed and learn about the gradual progression of the disease.
