Connecting Carers to Support. | Let’s Talk about Dementia

AHP Dementia Webinar

“I enjoyed the care partners perspective about how they can be better supported.”

“It was a fantastic presentation from everyone – took in a lot of very useful information.”

“Great to hear about Frank and Ian’s experience and some of the AHP roles.”

We work together as an allied health professional’s community to develop, for you, a national AHP Dementia Webinar where we share the work and practice of allied health professionals in Scotland and our many partners. Our vision for the webinars is

“through working in partnership, we can all improve outcomes

for people that really matter”.

In our AHP Dementia webinar in August 2024, people joined the conversation with members of the National Dementia Carers Action Network, where they shared what has been helpful for them, offering advice on how we can work as allied health professionals. We also heard from a range of Allied Health Professionals who shared their their role to support family carers.  Our guest presenters were:

  • Frank O’Hagan & Ian Tomney – National Dementia Carers Action Network
  • Gill Gowran, Caroline Dougal & Sarah Jane Donald – Occupational Therapists
  • Gillian McMillan – Dietitian
  • Claire Craig – Physiotherapist

We invited participants at the end of the webinar to share something they would take away from the webinar and use in their practice, or life, or going forward. Here is a selection of the replies.

  • The hints and tips from the session.
  • I will use a lot of the advice daily in my role
  • The varied role of AHPs
  • How invaluable AHPs are and the resources they provide.
  • Make more use of the AHP resources that are available and encourage all of the people that I work with who are living with dementia to live the best life they can
  • More knowledge and keen to find out more re Carers’ Academy and Alzheimer Scotland resources for carers.
  • Continue to include carers in the conversation and care of their person.
  • How to better involve carers in the planning of their loved one’s carer
  • The importance of timely assessments and the impact that has on services being provided.
  • Use of range of resources specific to dementia, very useful for information and to signpost to
  • Mindful for carer’s perspective
  • The strategies the occupational therapist used such as the contrast-coloured bed spread and the tape around the light switch.
  • Contact AHPs to see if they will visit our centre, to chat to carers directly about their roles aiming to connecting them.
  • The range of AHP services available to people and greater knowledge about what they do.
