An international appeal to build societies in which people with disabilities can live with dignity, equality, and full participation.
- Disability Day promotes dignity, accessibility, and equal rights
- Indian states offer support, education, healthcare, and mobility programmes
- Inclusion promotes social development and empowerment of communities
Every year on December 3, the world observes International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992 (Resolution 47/3). The goal is simple but effective: promote dignity, equality, and full participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of life.
For 2025, the theme is “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.” It emphasizes how true development is only possible when every individual, regardless of disability, has access to opportunities, contributes to society, and lives independently and respectfully.

Why Disability Day Matters?
Even with the fast-moving technological, healthcare, and accessibility changes, millions of individuals with disabilities still struggle with their daily physical, social, and psychological challenges. An estimated 1.3 billion people have a significant disability. This accounts for 16% of the world’s population.
This day aims to answer all the rights which have been ignored so far
- Gain awareness of disability problems.
- Motivate dignity and respect for rights.
- Provide mobilization to enhance access to healthcare, education, and employment.
- Encourage communities around the world to be more inclusive.
At the UN Headquarters in New York, the observance includes opening sessions, panel discussions, and cultural events, bringing together Member States, civil society groups, and the private sector. The spirit of the day, however, goes far beyond the UN—everyone is encouraged to organize awareness activities promoting disability rights.

Progress Begins When Everyone Moves Forward Together
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities reminds us that social progress is impossible without inclusion. When people with disabilities are empowered, equipped, and respected, their communities become stronger and more resilient.
By supporting disability-friendly policies, encouraging accessibility, and creating an inclusive mindset, we can contribute to building a world where all people, without exception, are able to participate, contribute, and thrive.
Together, we should strive to create inclusive, compassionate, and equitable societies.
